'93 men's basketball

The Å·ÖÞ±­ÍøÍ¶_Å·ÖÞ±­ÍâΧapp-Ͷע¹ÙÍø men¡¯s basketball team scored 100 points in Saturday¡¯s sectional championship to reach the NCAA Division III Final Four. In 1993, the last time the Vikings reached the national semifinals, they also hit the century mark.

Arianna Quartet

The Arianna String Quartet will perform a free concert at 8 p.m. March 20 in the Denkmann Memorial Building, Wallenberg Hall. Founded in 1992, the St. Louis-based string quartet are faculty of the University of Missouri-St. Louis.

The internationally acclaimed Jazz Ambassadors of Washington, D.C., will continue a tradition of free performances at 2 p.m. March 15 in Centennial Hall.

Juvenile in Justice

The Å·ÖÞ±­ÍøÍ¶_Å·ÖÞ±­ÍâΧapp-Ͷע¹ÙÍø Teaching Museum of Art will present the photography exhibition "Juvenile in Justice" March 13-April 18.

An opening reception will be held at 4 p.m. March 13 in Centennial Hall with Richard Ross, the artist. "Juvenile in Justice" is a collection of more than 50 large-scale photographs accompanied by the personal stories of the young prisoners.

Bill Albracht to sign books here

Å·ÖÞ±­ÍøÍ¶_Å·ÖÞ±­ÍâΧapp-Ͷע¹ÙÍø will host author, former state senate candidate and Army veteran Bill Albracht for a book signing March 16. Albracht will sign his new book, "Abandoned In Hell," which chronicles his experiences behind enemy lines while in Vietnam in 1969.

Å·ÖÞ±­ÍøÍ¶_Å·ÖÞ±­ÍâΧapp-Ͷע¹ÙÍø Å·ÖÞ±­ÍøÍ¶_Å·ÖÞ±­ÍâΧapp-Ͷע¹ÙÍø will host a lecture by Robert Krulwich, co-host of the award-winning NPR science program, "Radiolab," on Wednesday, April 1 at 7:30 p.m. in Olin Auditorium (733 35th Street, Rock Island). The lecture, "Talking Science to Non-Scientists: Saddam Hussein's Secret Octopus and Other Stories," is made possible by the Lawrence H. Roys Endowment. Admission is free and the public is invited.

Flute masterclass

Flutist Demarre McGill taught Å·ÖÞ±­ÍøÍ¶_Å·ÖÞ±­ÍâΧapp-Ͷע¹ÙÍø students that music performance is more than notes, showing them how to use scenarios, movement and "controlling the silence" as well. He taught a masterclass at Å·ÖÞ±­ÍøÍ¶_Å·ÖÞ±­ÍâΧapp-Ͷע¹ÙÍø earlier this month.

Crowe's Cosmic Defiance

Dr. David Crowe, professor of English, has completed a book examining John Updike's many claims about S?ren Kierkegaard's life and work. In "Cosmic Defiance: Updike's Kierkegaard and the Maples Stories," Dr. Crowe tells the story of Updike's first reading of Kierkegaard and life-long fascination with the existentialist theologian.

Cellist and students partner in powerful piece

"The Protecting Veil" by British composer John Tavener is a haunting work for cello and strings. Å·ÖÞ±­ÍøÍ¶_Å·ÖÞ±­ÍâΧapp-Ͷע¹ÙÍø music professor Janina Ehrlich is performing the solo part for the first time with the Å·ÖÞ±­ÍøÍ¶_Å·ÖÞ±­ÍâΧapp-Ͷע¹ÙÍø Symphony Orchestra.

Director Jennifer Popple¡¯s decision to set her Å·ÖÞ±­ÍøÍ¶_Å·ÖÞ±­ÍâΧapp-Ͷע¹ÙÍø Å·ÖÞ±­ÍøÍ¶_Å·ÖÞ±­ÍâΧapp-Ͷע¹ÙÍø production of As You Like It in the 1960s is one of the most appropriate changes in time-setting for theatrical material... Such shifts sometimes seem gimmicky, or are better in concept than execution, but here it works, and works well.

Å·ÖÞ±­ÍøÍ¶_Å·ÖÞ±­ÍâΧapp-Ͷע¹ÙÍø's Department of Theatre Arts will put a groovy spin on Shakespeare¡¯s "As You Like It" during the first two weekends of May. ¡°The pastoral comedy of 'As You Like It' and the revolutionary decade of the 1960s bring forth such similar themes," said sophomore Trevor Jablonski, who is dramaturge for the production.
